REVITALIZED SUVA BUS STAND NEARS COMPLETION
May 7, 2025The Suva City Council’s Health Team has today taken decisive action to close down a fast food restaurant located along Cumming Street due to persistent and unacceptable insanitary conditions. This closure comes after the restaurant failed to comply with an abatement notice issued by Council Health Inspectors last week.
Following routine inspections, Health Inspectors identified significant breaches of food safety standards within the food establishment. An abatement notice was subsequently served, outlining the necessary remedial actions required to ensure the safety and hygiene of the premises for the public.
Despite the issuance of the abatement notice and several subsequent reminders from the Suva City Council Health Department, the restaurant management failed to implement the required improvements within the stipulated timeframe. In accordance with the Food Safety Act 2003, the decision was made to close the restaurant.
Suva City Council Acting CEO Mr Tevita Boseiwaqa emphasized the Council’s unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of hygiene and food safety across all food establishments within Suva.
“The Suva City Council places the utmost priority on the health and safety of every resident and visitor to our city. The insanitary conditions observed at this particular food outlet presented an intolerable risk to public health. Despite being afforded ample opportunity and clear directives to rectify these critical issues, the restaurant management regrettably failed to take the required corrective measures. This lack of compliance has forced the Council to take this firm action,” he said.
Mr. Boseiwaqa added the fast food restaurant will remain closed until the management undertakes and completes all necessary remedial actions to achieve full compliance with all the relevant public health regulations.
“Once the restaurant has completed its necessary compliance checks, a thorough re-inspection by the Council Health Inspectors will be done, tentatively scheduled for next week. The officers will then confirm whether the premises no longer present any risk to public health; only then will any consideration be given to permitting the restaurant to resume its operations. The Council will not hesitate to take decisive and appropriate action, including immediate closure against any food business that fails to meet these essential standards designed to protect the health and well-being of our community.”
SCC Health Inspectors will continue to conduct regular and rigorous inspections throughout the city.
