January 22, 2026The Suva City Council today marked a significant milestone in urban infrastructure and public safety with the official opening of the refurbished Suva Bus Station.
The reopening ceremony was officiated by the Hon. Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, who emphasised the importance of investing in safer, more accessible public transport facilities for the people of Fiji.
An investment of over $1 million was directed toward upgrading the station’s three terminals. Major improvement works included sealing and resealing of terminal surfaces, repainting, enhanced directional signage, improved traffic and pedestrian markings, and designated accessibility markings to better accommodate persons living with disabilities. Security cameras have also been installed across all terminals to further strengthen safety and monitoring within the facility.
Serving more than 20,000 commuters and pedestrians daily, the Suva Bus Station remains one of the busiest transport hubs in the capital. The refurbishment prioritises pedestrian safety by improving traffic flow, reducing congestion points between buses and foot traffic, and creating a more organised and user-friendly environment.
The project reflects strong collaboration between the Suva City Council and the Fiji Roads Authority, reinforcing a shared commitment to modernising transport infrastructure and enhancing commuter experience.
In his address, Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlighted that safe and efficient public transport facilities are essential for a growing city and reaffirmed Government’s support for initiatives that protect pedestrians and improve urban mobility.
The Suva City Council has also called on members of the public to play their part in maintaining the cleanliness and integrity of the upgraded facility, noting that shared responsibility is key to sustaining improvements for the long term.
The refurbished Suva Bus Station stands as a clear example of practical progress — prioritising safety, accessibility and responsible urban management for Fiji’s capital city.
