SCC Announces New Policies to Prioritize Staff Welfare and Development in 2025
January 6, 2025The Suva City Council (SCC) remains dedicated to balancing urban development with the welfare of its stakeholders. As part of the ambitious Bridge to Bridge project, undertaken in collaboration with the Fiji Roads Authority, road upgrades and resealing works have commenced in the capital to enhance Suva’s functionality and aesthetics. Consequently, the Council has taken necessary steps to relocate stallholders from the MPI Carpark to the Suva Municipal Market.
In response to recent media reports, SCC wishes to clarify the situation regarding the stall removals and the proactive measures taken to support the affected vendors. Currently, 13 vendors and 24 stalls will be relocated as part of these essential upgrades. Over the past few months, the Council has actively engaged with stall owners by issuing reminder notices and collaborating closely to identify suitable alternative locations for their businesses. These efforts have ensured the relocation process is smooth, equitable, and in full compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards while facilitating the necessary infrastructure improvements.
SCC Acting CEO Mr. Tevita Boseiwaqa reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to minimizing disruptions to vendors’ livelihoods.
“The Council has worked diligently to ensure this process is inclusive and transparent. We signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the stall owners after thorough consultations last month and we were pleased that the feedback from the vendors has been largely positive. This reflects our shared commitment to creating a solution that benefits everyone involved. It is saddening to hear that some have reverted to the media, given the lengths the Council has gone to provide alternative options for them. As demolition works begin at the MPI Carpark, stall owners are expected to move to their new locations tomorrow at the Suva Market and Bean Carts.”
To ensure the upgrades proceed smoothly and minimize inconvenience to daily commuters, temporary road closures will be implemented. These closures limited to the entrance of the bus stand will take place between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM to avoid disruptions during peak traffic hours.
Highlighting the broader objectives of the project, Mr. Boseiwaqa stated:
“The collaboration between the Suva City Council and the Fiji Roads Authority is a testament to our shared commitment to improving the city’s infrastructure in a way that meets the community’s present and future needs. The drainage works are currently underway from the first phase of this four-week project. These upgrades are essential for enhancing the aesthetic of the City while creating a more reliable and efficient urban environment for all.”
The Suva City Council encourages the public and stakeholders to remain patient and supportive as these essential upgrades are carried out to improve the city’s infrastructure for everyone’s benefit.
