SCC ENSURES SMOOTH TRANSITION FOR MPI CARPARK VENDORS

The Suva City Council (SCC) is addressing concerns raised by shop owners regarding the misuse of public seating along Terry Walk in Suva. Reports of illegal vendors occupying benches for public use have disrupted the area, affecting customer comfort and local businesses.
SCC Acting CEO, Mr. Tevita Boseiwaqa, reassured the public that decisive measures have been implemented to resolve the issue and maintain Terry Walk as a welcoming space for everyone.
“This area was designed to serve the public, not as an extension of nearby restaurants or for unauthorized stalls. Enforcement officers have been instructed to monitor the site and ensure compliance closely. We are committed to stricter enforcement and collaborative efforts with stakeholders to identify long-term solutions,” Mr Boseiwaqa said.
The misuse of benches is not a new issue for SCC; similar concerns had been successfully addressed when benches were used for activities such as drinking grog.
However, Mr Boseiwaqa added the recent recurrence has necessitated renewed action to preserve the intended purpose of these public amenities.
“Plans include increased surveillance, proactive enforcement, and partnerships with businesses and community members to sustain a safe and inviting environment along Terry Walk.”
The Council encourages the public to report any misuse of public spaces to support efforts in keeping Terry Walk accessible and beneficial for all while promoting local businesses in the area.
