SUVA CITY COUNCIL AND FIJI POLICE FORCE STRENGTHEN COOPERATION THROUGH MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING SIGNING
March 12, 2025The highly anticipated Fiji Fringe Festival is back for its third consecutive year, bringing a vibrant celebration of arts and culture to the heart of Suva’s City Centre for the very first time. Previously held outside the Central Business District, this year’s festival marks a significant milestone by transforming the City Centre into a hub for artistic expression and creative engagement.
Inspired by the fringe franchises, the renowned Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Adelaide Fringe, the Fiji Fringe Festival, is dedicated to providing a curated platform where artists can showcase their creativity and passion. Scheduled for March 29th, 2025 to April 5th, 2025, the festival will feature over 50 dynamic events, including performances, creative workshops and interactive experiences, reflecting Fiji’s rich artistic heritage while connecting with a broader global network of creative communities.
The Festivals Company Director Sharleen Ali highlighted the sole purpose of the festival today during the media launch at Civic Centre in Suva.
“Fiji Fringe is about creating a platform where artists thrive and grow. The festival continues to provide invaluable opportunities for emerging and established artists. The struggle for the arts has always been real and as a former artist myself, I understand the importance of creating this space. A key aspect of the festival’s commitment to artists is its financial support system. The festival covers essential costs such as venue hire, basic lighting and sound, which significantly reduces the financial burden on performers,” Miss Ali said.
Additionally, Ali further emphasized the festival’s commitment to supporting artists: “We ensure that 80% of ticket sales go directly back to the performing artists, allowing them to earn an income. This initiative sustains the festival and empowers local artists to reinvest in their craft, whether by purchasing sound/light equipment or funding future productions,” Miss Ali added.
The Suva City Council as the principal partner will be instrumental in creating the festival’s vibrant atmosphere, including organizing a variety of stalls, children’s rides and Micro, Small & Medium Enterprise vendor stalls.
Suva City Council Acting CEO Mr. Tevita Boseiwaqa expressed his support for the festival and its broader impact:
“The Fiji Fringe Festival is much more than just an opportunity for artists to showcase their work. It is a powerful catalyst for economic and cultural development in Suva. By bringing the festival into the heart of the City Centre, we are not only fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts, but also supporting local businesses and boosting tourism. This initiative highlights the importance of investing in the creative industries, providing sustainable platforms for artistic expression, and we are fully committed to supporting the festival as it continues to grow and reach new heights across Fiji.”
Looking ahead, the Fiji Fringe Festival aspires to expand its reach beyond Suva and Nadi, encompassing regions across Fiji to highlight the nation’s rich and diverse artistic traditions.
