March 6, 2025The Suva City Council’s Health & Waste Management Department successfully hosted a workshop today for food vendors and juice sellers at the Civic Centre. The workshop, specifically designed for juice sellers and kiosk food vendors, saw the participation of more than 20 vendors, all of whom play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and quality of food and beverages for the public.
The training covered a range of essential topics, including food safety and handling practices, proper hygiene standards, and compliance with safety regulations. This initiative aims to ensure that all vendors at the Suva Municipal Market adhere to the highest standards of food safety and hygiene.
The Suva City Council remains committed to maintaining and improving public health, particularly in high-traffic areas such as the Suva Municipal Market, which serves as a central hub for residents and visitors.
Suva City Council Acting CEO Mr. Tevita Boseiwaqa emphasized the vital role that food vendors play in safeguarding public health and building customer trust by following proper safety protocols.
“This workshop is part of the Council’s ongoing efforts to enhance service quality, improve food safety, and promote good hygiene practices within the marketplace. We want to ensure that every vendor, regardless of size, upholds the highest standards of food safety, hygiene, and customer service. Vendors are essential to the local economy, and this training is a step towards creating a cleaner, safer, and more hygienic environment for both vendors and customers,” said Mr. Boseiwaqa.
Participants expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to refine their business practices, allowing them to serve the public with greater confidence and professionalism.
Key training components included:
- Proper food handling techniques to prevent contamination
- Adherence to hygiene standards and proper sanitation of food preparation areas
- Appropriate attire for food vendors to minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses
- Compliance with legal requirements and safety regulations in the food and beverage sector
The Suva City Council will continue monitoring the implementation of these best practices and will conduct periodic follow-up sessions to ensure compliance.
