January 14, 2025Expression on Interest: Redevelopment of the Old Raiwaqa Market
January 18, 2025In a landmark step to enhance the tourist experience in the capital, the Suva City Council (SCC) and the Fiji Police have joined forces to ensure a safer and more organized environment for cruise ship visitors.
This collaborative initiative is set to address key challenges and improve management across Suva’s major tourist hotspots.
The first stakeholders’ meeting of the year was held today at the SCC headquarters where both parties agreed to establish a specialized taskforce comprising the Tourist Police and SCC Operations Team.
The taskforce will focus on patrolling high-traffic areas frequented by tourists, including the Suva Municipal Market, Suva Handicrafts Centre, Thurston Gardens, and Albert Park.
While these areas are popular tourist destinations, they are also shared by street dwellers and the general public, posing unique challenges. The taskforce’s responsibilities will include addressing concerns related to unregulated tour guides, tour operators, and short sellers.
SCC CEO Mr Tevita Boseiwaqa said to tackle these issues profiling activities will commence tomorrow, laying the groundwork for the introduction of a Code of Conduct to uphold safety and professionalism.
“This partnership reflects our commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors to Suva. The Council aims to ensure tourists leave with a positive impression of our city while addressing community concerns with empathy and professionalism,” Mr Boseiwaqa added.
SCC and Fiji Police are confident that this initiative will strengthen Suva’s position as a premier destination for cruise ship passengers and international travelers.
